MOUNTAIN HIGH OPENS FOR SKIING/SNOWBOARDING THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29TH
(First to open 13 years in a row)
Wrightwood, CA – October 28, 2009: Mountain High Resort in Wrightwood will open tomorrow, October 29th, making this the 13th year in a row they have been the first resort to open in Southern California with top to bottom riding. This also marks the resort’s earliest opening ever on machine made snow.
Says Karl Kapuscinski, “This has the feel of a great season. With our early opening, El Nino looming, and the economy recovering, we feel very positive about the upcoming winter.”
IMPORTANT!!! Thursday will be open to season pass holders only. For avid skiers and snowboarders looking for a recession-proof deal, Mountain High’s $299 Anytime Season Pass is a great way to save money. Regularly $599, this pass is good any day or night during the season, including holidays, and pays for itself in just five visits. Guests can get more information along with snow reports, live cams and text alerts at mthigh.com.
Beginning Friday, early season prices will be $25 for children ages 7 to 12, $30 for Night tickets from 5pm to 10pm, $35 for a 4-Hour ticket, and $40 for an 8-Hour ticket. Prices are subject to change without notice.
Operating hours will be 9am to 5pm on Thursday, 8:30am to 10pm on Friday, 8am to 10pm on Saturday, and 8am to 4pm on Sunday.
Up to two lifts will be available accessing four trails which consist of predominately beginner to intermediate terrain. Six to ten terrain features will also be on the mountain including several of Mountain High’s brand new jibs. Operations will continue on a day to day basis but are not expected to last past Sunday.
A full line of rental and retail products will be available along with repair services and food & beverage. The Winter Sports School is not yet offering lessons but will begin as soon as the necessary beginner terrain comes on line.
Cold temperatures and aggressive snowmaking are what lead to this early opening and Mountain High will continue to make snow whenever possible, even during the day, so guests are advised to dress warmly.
The SoCal snow season is here people! Get your shred on. And look good while you do it with your t shirts from Epic Ride Gear.

This story is based where the skateboard culture is the most foreign, the Midwest. Derrick Cabrera, like all skaters, has a dream of being sponsored and one day going pro. He is an up and coming skater with all the talent but has the world against him. Parents, friends and schoolmates can’t understand how Derrick has so much passion for something that has no future in their eyes. His crew of friends that are skaters is the only place he is truly accepted. But, as he gets better and better, the skater he looked up to the most becomes his worst enemy. In the sport of skateboarding a single trick that has never been done or conceived can bring you stardom in an instant. Derrick has that trick, if only he can make it. As he attempts to make this trick he is faced with skateproofing, a jealous friend and cops who have it in for him. Derrick finally gets arrested for skating on private property. After that his parents lay down the law and try to force him to quit skateboarding. Adding insult to injury, his girlfriend forces an ultimatum on him as well: “The skateboard or life with her.” At that point, Derrick gives up everything and runs away with his friends to the Tampa Am contest in Florida. This is a weekend that can turn an unknown skateboarder into a future star. He sees it as his only shot to make it in skateboarding. Derrick’s rivalry comes to a head in Florida when his crew of friends abandons him because of his jealous mentor. A top amateur’s sister rescues Derrick by giving him a place to stay and convincing him to believe in himself. With all the world of skateboarding watching, Derrick finally makes the trick that shocks the entire skate world and instantly thrusts him into the spotlight. His dream of being sponsored has come true. Written by Rob Dyrdek

We recently came across this video from Dirtbag Productions- “All Up In That Asshole”. This video was the winner of the Big Hit Snowboard Shop video contest in Breck. This isn’t one of those all pro videos, but THIS is the kind of stuff we love to see! Locals tearing it up, having fun, and shenanigans… this is what snowboarding is all about.
Big ups to Ian Zinner for filming and editing!
