Wrightwood, CA – February 16, 2010: The $25,000 Cholula Triple Air returns to Mountain High this Saturday, February 20th, for its 12th straight season. The Triple Air is the resort’s largest one-day snowboarding competition and participants come from as far away as Utah and Colorado to battle for the enormous prize purse. Cholula Hot Sauce, Monster Energy, Powder And Sun Ride Shop, and Jarritos Soda have pooled a terrific $25,000 in cash and prizes, and the top rider takes home a whopping $10,000.

The Cholula Triple Air Show is a modified big air contest. Not one but three enormous jumps stand between the rider and the podium, and competitors are judged on their amplitude, execution, and technical difficulty. First held in snowboarding’s method-grabbing heyday of 1998, the Triple Air has been bringing top-name riders to the region for 12 years and past participants include Shaun White, Chaz Guldemond, Kevin Pearce, and Keegan Valaika.

Says John McColly, Director of Marketing, “The Triple Air is where we shine. It’s our largest event of the season and this year it will be at the East Resort so it is easily accessible to all spectators.”

Registration takes place from 7am to 9am in the Angeles Crest Café (East Resort), and the event begins promptly at 10am. Entry fees are $150 for Open Mens Snowboarding, $125 for Open Women’s Snowboarding, and $125 for the Open Skiing division. Cash prizes are paid out to 16th place in the mens division, 6th place in the women’s, 6th place in skiers, and there is a special $1,000 cash prize for best trick. All competitors receive a complimentary breakfast, souvenir bib, and lunch compliments of Wahoo’s Fish Tacos. Immediately following the event is a huge after party in the Snowshoe Saloon with DJs, raffles, and guest hosts, the Monster Energy Girls.

January 5th, 2010

Story from Mt. High website:

Wrightwood, CA – January 5, 2009: Mountain High Resort in Wrightwood is proud to name Vans its official terrain park sponsor. Besides the traditional media plays and park branding, Vans will be an active participant in the resort producing on-hill events such as jib contests, product demos and team rider appearances. Also look for a signature Vans terrain feature in 2010.

Says John McColly, Director of Marketing, “I’m stoked to see this collaboration finally come together. The synergies are great and it’s something we’ve been working on for a while.”

While collaborations between Vans and Mountain High go back to the late 1990’s, only recently have the two combined forces to flex their collective marketing efforts. Co-branding is taking place at the mountain and at Vans outlets throughout Southern California, and social media campaigns have been developed to fuel Vans-themed sales events. Monthly on-hill competitions called Jib City Nights will also drive guests to the resort with music, barbecues and giveaways.

As part of the sponsorship, all Mountain High Terrain Park employees will be fitted with Vans boots and, as owners of Pro-tec helmets, Vans has also capped the crew with custom Mountain High head gear to promote and encourage mountain safety.

“All of us at Vans are very excited about the partnership with Mountain High. They have done a great job promoting their park and we have some awesome events lined up for the winter season,” said Peter Dericks, Vans Marketing Director.

Kevin Pearce Injured

January 5th, 2010

The Olympic snowboarding hopeful Kevin Pearce was in critical condition Thursday after sustaining a head injury during training in the halfpipe in Park City, Utah.

Pearce hit his head against the edge of the halfpipe and was knocked unconscious. He was flown to the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City, where doctors planned external ventricular drainage to relieve fluid buildup in the brain, according to Pearce’s mother, Pia.

Pearce, a 22-year-old from Norwich, Vt., was among many of the world’s top halfpipe riders in Park City preparing to compete next week in a competition at Mammoth Mountain, Calif., an event that will serve as part of the Olympic trials.

Pearce, a favorite to make the United States Olympic team, is the rare rider who has beaten the 2006 Olympic gold medalist Shaun White in head-to-head competitions the past couple of years.

Mike Jankowski, the Olympic halfpipe coach for the United States, said that Pearce was injured while trying a double cork, a supremely difficult trick — essentially a twisting double back flip — that most of the top men are trying to add to their repertory this season.

“He did it a little too hard, put a little too much oomph into it, and over-rotated on his second flip,” Jankowski said.

He said that Pearce seemed to strike the edge of the pipe just above his eye. He said that the preliminary diagnosis was for a “significant concussion.” A team trainer and medical director were with Pearce at the hospital.

Pearce’s father is Simon Pearce, one of the most renowned glass blowers in the world, whose Vermont based company has retail outlets across the Northeast, including one on Park Avenue.

Andreas Wiig signs with Forum Snowboards

December 1st, 2009

The rumors are true. As winter has arrived, so has Norwegian phenom Andreas Wiig to Forum’s pro team. Joining Peter Line, Eddie Wall, Pat Moore, Jake Welch, Stevie Bell, John Jackson, Nic Sauve and Daniel Ek, Andreas is set to give it 110% this season. Whether riding the park, at a slopestyle event or filming in the backcountry, Wiig continually pushes his limits.

“It’s an honor to be part of such a talented and progressive team, a team that is setting the standard in snowboarding today,” says Wiig. “I already know most of the guys on the team and I’m looking forward to riding with them. It’s going to be good times.”

“There is no better fit for Forum than Andreas. Forum is a cutting-edge freestyle brand and that is exactly who Andreas is, always taking it to a new level,” states Director of Team Marketing, Bryan Knox. “We are all extremely happy to be working with a rider of this caliber.”

Thinking back to when his snowboarding career began and how he got to where he is today, Andreas is looking forward to focusing more on filming and shooting photos. Although he’ll continue to participate in select contests globally, the emphasis of Wiig’s upcoming season seems to be reconnecting with his roots.
